![]() Still better than those 1-2a CRJs to COS and what not. Of course, that last bank (1140p-1159p) has some really crazy arrivals, such as a 338a arrival at DFW, 217a at SLC, 209a at PDX, 230a at SEA. ![]() HP (now US) has pretty much done away with that late-night bank of departures. Airlines would have to keep check-in desks staffed, the ramp staffed, ect for this time.Įdit: God, I should have known by the time I type this 4 other people would have said the same points. Flying in during these hours of the day the NIMBY's might actually start to have a case.well, maybe not.Ĥ. Lots of people whine about airplane noise during daytime flights, alot of airports have noise restrictions. For me it's much more manageable to arrive at 4-5am for the 6am flight out arriving in the early morning 8-9am, then I'm awake and can hang out all day.ģ. That would be one hell of a morning and I'd waste half the day sleeping to recover from all that which would really defeat the purpose of arriving and starting vacation with that extra day. Who wants to start a vacation at 3-4am? Get to the airport at 11pm, takeoff 1am, arrive at strange airport 3am, arrange pickup or get to destination 4am. The longer "more popular" routes have red-eye flights already which arrive in the morning after sunrise, at a time the plane can turn around and fly out on an early route.Ģ. Not many people want to do short-medium haul flights at these times. I remember seeing about 35 to 40 people on these flights, max, each time I flew them.ġ. DL used to have lots of flights leaving destinations at around 5a about three years ago and even that has been dropped for a lot of the reasons I just discussed, not to mention the obviously bad load factors. No one would get up that early, even for a dirt-cheap fare. Plus you also have to have people around to staff these flights. That means that pax have to get up at an ungodly hour (1-2 am), drive 30 to 45 minutes (including parking) to get to the airport and then wait another hour/hour-and-a-half to get to the gate and board the flight. Remember, you have to check in at least 90 minutes prior to departure and you should be at the gate an hour before each flight. I'm talking about flights between 1am and 4am.ĭo you think airlines could make more money like this? That might not always be the case, but if I can get a direct flight with a 4 hour drive and summer driving conditions (and find a park and fly so I can spend the night at the airport when I return) I think that would be my personal preferrence. Why won't airlines add really early flights in the summer to increase capacity to some of the most popular destinations? Last time I checked, it was more than $1,000 per ticket more to do the trip starting in Ithaca. Wow, thanks for all the tips responses have been amazingly helpful! I really don't mind driving to an airport - and it is sounding like Newark will be our best bet if it means a direct flight (I'm enough of a control freak that I prefer not having to worry about missed connections or luggage missing connections).Īlso, one of the problems with having a small market and a super small airport is that airlines sometimes pull out completely, or radically cut back their service, and I've gone through a major ordeal trying to reschedule a trip when that happened (last time resulted in having to endure a 7 hour scheduled wait between flights on a domestic trip). With the day time flight, there is still a bit of an issue with jet lag, but you eliminate the lack of sleep problem. When I take an overnight flight, I suffer from jet lag and lack of sleep from staying up all night on the flight. ![]() I typically take the tube to my hotel on arrival and just stay up a bit late and sleep a bit late the first day. Arrive the night before, get a good night's sleep, and fly in the morning to London. You could look into a package at a nearby hotel that includes parking. The type of plane doesn't matter as much as you are not trying to sleep on the plane. I am very partial to these daytime flights and choose them over a red eye any chance I get. American and BA have morning flights out of JFK. Virgin and Continental both have morning flights out of Newark. You leave around 9am and arrive in London around 9pm (4pm East Coast time). Have you considered a daytime flight instead of a red eye? From NY, a couple of the airlines have flights that leave in the morning and arrive in London the same day. ![]()
